The Royal Leicestershire Regiment Museum Appeal
In 1964, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment was amalgamated into the Royal Anglian Regiment (to become the 4th Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment) and was subsequently deactivated in the 1970s. The regimental museum collection continued to be exhibited in the old Territorial Army Center at The Keep, Leicester, Leicestershire, until 1994, when it was closed due to structural instability. Since then, only 5% of the regiment's collection has been on exhibit, at the New Walk Museum in Leicester.
On 20 June 2003, the Royal Tigers Association launched the Royal Leicestershire Regiment Museum Appeal to raise money for a new museum to house the regiment's collection, which ranks among the largest and oldest collections of British military material in the United Kingdom. The Association was granted permission to use exhibit space in the Newarke House Museum, Leicester, and has now set up an operational museum displaying artifacts depicting all eras of the regiment's history. Additional funds are always needed for maintenance of the display space and acquisition of further material relating to the unit, so your donations are still needed.
Are you interested in preserving British military heritage? Would you like to view a tremendous collection of valuable material that has been left in storage for over 10 years? Do you wish to insure that the sacrifices of the men and women associated with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment over its 300 year history are never forgotten? If so, please contribute to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment Museum Appeal today. In doing so, you will be preserving an important piece of British and world history for your own enjoyment and the education of future generations.
